རྒྱལ་བའི་བཀའ། The Word of the Buddha
ཐར་པ་རང་ལ་རགས་ལས་ཤེས་པར་གྱིས། །
I have shown you the methods that lead to liberation,
But you should know that liberation depends upon yourself.[1]
དེ་རྒྱུ་དེ་བཞིན་གཤེགས་པས་གསུངས། །
རྒྱུ་ལ་འགོག་པ་གང་ཡིན་པ། །
諸法從緣起， All dharmas originate from causes.
如來說是因， The Tathagata has taught these causes,
彼法因緣盡， And also that which puts a stop to these causes—
是大沙門說。 This too has been taught by the Great Shramana.

om ye dharma hetu prabhawa
嗡 耶 達瑪 黑圖 卓巴瓦
hetun teshan tathagato hyavadat teshan
黑敦 得堪 達塔嘎多 哈雅巴迪 得堪
tsa yo nirodha ewam vade mahashramanah soha
匝 友 呢日搭 哎灣 巴諦 瑪哈夏惹嘛那 梭哈
བསྲེག་བཅད་བརྡར་བའི་གསེར་བཞིན་དུ། །
ལེགས་པར་བརྟག་ལ་ང་ཡི་བཀའ། །
Monks and learned ones,
Just as gold is burnt, cut and rubbed,
Examine my words carefully and
Do not accept them simply out of respect.
ང་ཉིད་ཡི་གེའི་གཟུགས་སུ་གནས། །
ང་ཡིན་སྙམ་དུ་ཡིད་བྱོས་ལ། །
In the last five hundred year period,
I will appear in the form of scriptures.
Consider them as identical to me,
And treat them with due respect.
ཐོས་པས་སྡིག་ལས་ལྡོག་པར་འགྱུར། །
ཐོས་པས་དོན་མ་ཡིན་པ་སྤོང༌། །
Through study we come to understand phenomena.
Through study we turn away from negative actions.
Through study we give up what is meaningless.
Through study we reach the state beyond sorrow.

O Bhagavan, a bodhisattva should not train in many practices. O Bhagavan, if a bodhisattva keeps to one practice and learns it perfectly, he has all the Buddha’s teachings in the palm of his hand. What is that one practice? It is great compassion.

གང་དག་ང་ལ་སྒྲར་ཤེས་པ། །
ལོག་པར་སྤོང་བས་ཞུགས་པ་སྟེ། །
若以色見我， Those who see my body as ordinary form,
以音聲求我， And hear my voice as ordinary sound,
是人行邪道。 Have set out upon a mistaken path.
不能見如來。 Such people do not truly see me.
釋迦摩尼佛，《能斷金剛般若波羅蜜經》

སྒྱུ་མ་ཟིལ་པ་ཆུ་བུར་དང་། །
རྨི་ལམ་གློག་དང་སྤྲིན་ལྟ་བུ། །
鳩摩羅什譯本：「一切有為法，如夢幻泡影，如露亦如電，應作如是觀。」
玄奘大師譯本：「諸和合所為，如星翳燈幻，露泡夢電雲，應作如是觀。」
Like a star, hallucination, candle,
Magical illusion, dewdrop, bubble,
Dream, lightning or a cloud—
Know all compounded phenomena to be like this.
釋迦摩尼佛，《能斷金剛般若波羅蜜經》
（又譯《佛說能斷金剛般若波羅蜜多經》，簡稱《金剛經》）
The mind is devoid of mind,
For the nature of mind is clear light.
ཆོས་ལ་སྨན་གྱི་འདུ་ཤེས་བསྐྱེད་པར་བྱའོ། །
དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་ལ་སྨན་པ་མཁས་པའི་འདུ་ཤེས་བསྐྱེད་པར་བྱའོ། །
善男子！ Noble one,
應於自身生病苦想， think of yourself as someone who is sick,
於所說法生良藥想， Of the Dharma as the remedy,
於善知識生醫王想， Of your spiritual teacher as a skilful doctor,
於所修行生除病想。 And of diligent practice as the way to recovery.
釋迦牟尼佛，《樹王莊嚴經》（樹嚴經）/《華嚴經》入法界品
སྨྲེ་སྔགས་མ་འདོན་ཀུན་དགའ་བོ། །
ང་ཉིད་ཕྱི་མའི་དུས་ཀྱི་ཚེ། །
དགེ་བའི་བཤེས་གཉེན་ཉིད་སྤྲུལ་ནས། །
Don’t feel sad Ananda,
Don’t lament Ananda,
In future times I will
Take the form of spiritual teachers,
To help you and others.
གཟུགས་སྟོང་པའོ། སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་གཟུགས་སོ།
གཟུགས་ལས་སྟོང་པ་ཉིད་གཞན་མ་ཡིན།
色即是空，空即是色 Form is emptiness; emptiness also is form.
色不異空 Emptiness is no other than form,
空不異色 Form is no other than emptiness.
釋迦摩尼佛，《心經》
སེམས་ནི་རྒྱ་ཆེན་མཆོག་ཏུ་རབ་བསྐྱེད་དེ། །
འགྲོ་བ་འདི་དག་མ་ལུས་སངས་རྒྱས་རྒྱུ། །
The essence of the sugatas pervades all beings.
Generate the most vast and sublime of intentions,
For each and every being has the cause of awakening—
There is not a single sentient being who lacks this potential.
འཇིག་རྟེན་མགོན་པོ་ཀུན་ཏུ་མཛེས་པ་སྟེ། །
དམིགས་པ་དེ་ལ་གང་གི་སེམས་འཇོག་པ། །
His pure body is the colour of gold,
Beautiful is the Protector of the World.
Whoever visualizes him like this,
Practises the meditation of the bodhisattvas.
གཙང་དང་མི་གཙང་འདི་ཡང་མཐའ་ཡིན་སྟེ། །
དེ་ཕྱིར་གཉིས་ཀའི་མཐའ་ནི་རབ་སྤངས་ནས། །
Existence and non-existence are extremes,
Purity and impurity are extremes as well,
Thus, having relinquished both extremes,
The wise do not dwell even in the middle.
བུ་ཕོ་བྱུང་ཞིང་ཤི་བ་དེ་མཐོང་ན། །
བྱུང་ནས་དགའ་ཞིང་ཤི་ནས་མི་དགའ་ལྟར། །
If, in her dream, a young girl
Has a baby boy who later dies,
She feels joy at first, then grief—
Know all things to be like this.
རྟ་དང་གླང་པོ་ཤིང་རྟ་སྣ་ཚོགས་བྱས། །
དེ་ལ་ཇི་ལྟར་སྣང་བ་གང་ཡང་མེད། །
Just as a magician makes illusions
Of horses, oxen, carts and other things,
Nothing whatsoever is as it appears—
Know all things to be like this.
དགེ་བ་ཕུན་སུམ་ཚོགས་པར་སྤྱད། །
རང་གི་སེམས་ནི་ཡོངས་སུ་འདུལ། །
諸惡莫作 Commit not a single unwholesome action,
眾善奉行 Cultivate a wealth of virtue,
自淨其意 Tame completely this mind of ours—
是諸佛教 This is the teaching of the buddhas.

釋迦摩尼佛，《別解脫經》
（此偈乃過去七佛對弟子的共通教誡）
ལོངས་སྤྱོད་མཛའ་དང་བཤེས་རྣམས་རྗེས་མི་འབྲང་། །
སྐྱེས་བུ་དག་ནི་གང་ནས་གར་འགྲོ་ཡང༌། །
When his time has come, even a king has to die,
And neither his friends nor his wealth can follow him.
So for us—wherever we stay, wherever we go—
Karma follows us like a shadow.
ཁྱེད་ཀྱིས་གཞན་ལས་མ་གསན་རང་གིས་རིག །
དེ་ནི་ཀུན་རྫོབ་བདེན་དང་དོན་དམ་སྟེ། །
You, the knower of the world,
Realized the two levels of reality,
By yourself, not studying them from others.
They are the relative and the ultimate.
There is not some third level of reality.

མི་གནོད་སྙམ་དུ་བརྙས་མི་བྱ། །
མེ་སྟག་ཆུང་ངུ་དག་གིས་ཀྱང༌། །
Do not disregard small misdeeds,
Thinking they are harmless,
Because even tiny sparks of flame,
Can set fire to a mountain of hay.
མི་ཕན་སྙམ་དུ་བརྙས་མི་བྱ། །
ཆུ་ཡིས་ཐིགས་པ་བསགས་པ་ཡིས། །
Do not disregard small positive acts,
Thinking they are without benefit,
Because even tiny drops of water,
Will eventually fill a large container.
ཆུ་སྐྱར་ལས་ནི་ཆུར་ཤེས་ལྟར། །
བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་བློ་ལྡན་གྱི། །
Just as one infers the presence of fire by seeing smoke,
Or the presence of water by seeing aquatic birds,
The presence of the intelligent bodhisattvas’ disposition
Can be understood from certain signs.
ལེགས་པར་གསུངས་དང་དེའི་དགོངས་འགྲེལ་བ། །
དེའི་དབང་གིས་ཤཱཀྱའི་བསྟན་པ་ནི། །
All Dharma teachings are included in the Buddha’s word and the treatises,
The excellent speech and the commentaries on its intended meaning,
By means of these, the teaching of the Śakya
Will remain for long within this world.

རྒྱ་མཚོ་མ་ཟད་བར་དུ་དེ་མི་འཛད། །
དེ་བཞིན་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཡོངས་བསྔོས་དགེ་བ་ཡང༌། །
Just as a drop of water that falls into the great ocean
Will never disappear until the ocean itself runs dry,
Merit totally dedicated to enlightenment
Will never disappear until enlightenment is reached.
ཡེ་ཤེས་ནི་རྟག་པའོ། །
Consciousness is impermanent.
Wisdom is permanent.
གསེར་གྱི་ཁ་མཆོག་འབར་བ་ཡིད་འོང་བ། །
དེ་འདྲ་འདི་ལའང་བྱེད་པོ་འགའ་མེད་དེ། །
དེ་དག་རྟོག་པའི་དབང་གིས་བཞག་པ་ཡིན། །
All kinds of variety, lovely flowers in bloom,
A golden palace gleaming and delightful,
Even such as these have no ultimate creator,
They are imputed by the power of thought
The whole world is imputed by the power of thought.

གལ་ཏེ་དེ་ལ་གཟུགས་མཆིས་ན། །
ནམ་མཁའི་ཁམས་ནི་ཀུན་གང་སྟེ། །
If the merit of bodhicitta
Were to take physical form,
Even the whole of space itself
Would not contain its vastness.

- ↑ This version, which is the standard form, appears in Śāntarakṣita’s Tattvasaṃgraha, where it is not attributed to any particular sūtra. A slightly different version is found in a tantra called Śrīmahābālatantrarāja (དཔལ་སྟོབས་པོ་ཆེའི་རྒྱུད་ཀྱི་རྒྱལ་པོ་): Just as gold is tested by being burnt, cut and rubbed, the learned should accept my words only after examining them, not simply out of faith or other such reasons.
བསྲེགས་བཅད་བརྡར་བའི་གསེར་བཞིན་དུལ... Although the paraphrase has become the standard, the actual quotation in the text reads:
འདི་ལྟར་སེམས་དེ་ནི་སེམས་མ་མཆིས་པ་སྟེ། །
སེམས་ཀྱི་རང་བཟིན་ནི་འོད་གསལ་བ་ལགས་སོ། །
ཡོངས་སུ་བརྟགས་ནས་ང་ཡི་བཀའ། །
བླང་བར་བྱ་ཡི་མོས་པའམ། །
གཞན་གྱིས་མཁས་པ་འཇུག་མི་བྱ། ། - ↑ Although the paraphrase has become the standard, the actual quotation in the text reads:
འདི་ལྟར་སེམས་དེ་ནི་སེམས་མ་མཆིས་པ་སྟེ། །
