Lobzang Palden Tenpé Nyima (Wyl. blo bzang dpal ldan bstan pa'i nyi ma), the Fourth Panchen Lama (1782-1854), was born in Panam in Tsang and recognised by the Eighth Dalai Lama, who gave him his upasaka ordination (1784), his novice ordination (1789) and his full ordination in 1801 along with many teachings from the sutras and tantras.

In 1808 Tenpé Nyima performed the hair-cutting ceremony and gave ordination to the Ninth Dalai Lama.

In 1822 he performed the hair-cutting ceremony and gave ordination to the Tenth Dalai Lama. In 1833 he gave him full ordination and instruction in the practice of the sutras and tantras.

In 1841 he performed the hair-cutting ceremony for the Eleventh Dalai Lama. In 1844 he was made Sikyong, or interim ruler of Tibet for nine months since the regent had had to resign. During this time he instructed the Dalai Lama in the sutras and tantras.

He wrote three volumes of commentaries on the Buddha's teachings. He passed away at Tashilhunpo Monastery aged 73 in 1854.
