Rejoicing

Once again the perfect Buddha said to Youthful Moonlight:
"Youthful one, this being so, a bodhisattva mahasattva who aspires to achieve this samadhi,
and who wishes to awaken quickly, truly, and fully to unexcelled true and complete enlightenment,
should be skilled in means".

"Youthful one, how does a bodhisattva mahasattva become skilled in means?
Youthful one, a bodhisattva mahasattva should keep an attitude of connectedness to all sentient beings.
A bodhisattva mahasattva should thus rejoice in the good roots of sentient beings and in whatever merit they have.
Three times a day and three times a night,
he should rejoice in the good roots of all beings and in their accumulation of merit,
and then, with the resolve aimed at the state of omniscient enlightenment,
he should give away his good roots and accumulated merit to all sentient beings.

"Youthful one, by possessing the merit resulting from being skilled in means,
a bodhisattva will quickly attain this samadhi,
and he will quickly awaken truly and fully to unexcelled true and complete enlightenment.

-Buddha Shakymuni, speaking to a disciple in the King of Samadhi Sutra.

When you are strong and healthy,You never think of sickness coming,
But it descends with sudden force.Like a stroke of lightning.
When involved in worldly things,You never think of death’s approach;
Quick it comes like thunder.Crashing round your head.

The Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma

In order to safeguard the beginner's mind from emotions shackled by ordinary clinging to duality,
the Buddha gave detailed teachings on the four noble truths
that primarily show the various issues that must be adopted or avoided,
the flaws and their remedies.
Next he taught the Dharma wheel on the absence of characteristics (emptiness) in order to stop attachment to the remedies.
Finally he gave teachings describing the basic nature - this was the Dharma wheel on fully revealing the ultimate.

分別概念生起時,見地現前為關要;
已然檢視自心後,如如安住為關要;

When conceptual thoughts arise, the direct view is crucial;
Having examined the mind, to settle is crucial;
Even as there is nothing to meditate on, to meditate is crucial.

"I rely on you, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, until I achieve englightenment.
Please grant me enough wisdom and courage to be free from delusion.

If I am supposed to get sick, let me get sick, and I'll be happy.
May this sickness purify my negative karma and the sickness of all other beings.

If I am supposed to be healed, let all my sickness and confusion be healed, and I'll be happy.
May all other beings be healed and filled with happiness.

If I am supposed to die, let me die, I'll be happy.
May all delusion and the causes of suffering of beings die.

If I am supposed to live a long life, let me live a long life, and I'll be happy.
May my life be meaningful in service to all other beings.

If my life is supposed to be cut short, let it be cut short, and I'll be happy.
May I and others be free from attachment and aversion."

For morality, nothing to do,

For patience, nothing to do,

For effort, nothing to do,

Five Ways to Rest the Mind in Meditation ~ Milarepa

Rest in a natural way like a small child.
Rest like an ocean without waves.
Rest within clarity like a candle flame.
Rest without self-concerns like a human corpse.
Rest unmoving like a mountain.

GENERATION OF BODDHICITTA

Ho!
Mesmerized by the sheer variety of perceptions,
which are like the illusory reflections of the moon in water,
Beings wander endlessly astray in samsara’s vicious cycle.
In order that they may find comfort and ease in the luminosity
and all-pervading space of the true nature of their minds,
I generate the immeasurable love, compassion,
joy and equanimity of the awakened mind, the heart of Bodhicitta.
~ JIKMÉ LINGPA

In these degenerate times, even with the wish to benefit,
Gives rise to negative states of mind.
‘To speak peacefully’ is my heart advice.

The Truth Which is Natural to Awareness ~ Tilopa

Obsessive use of meditative disciplines or perennial study of scripture
and philosophy will never bring forth this wonderful realization,
this truth which is natural to awareness, because the mind that desperately desires to reach another realm
or level of experience inadvertently ignores the basic light that constitutes all experience.

~ quoted in the book Teachers of Wisdom https://www.amazon.com/Teachers-Wisdom-Dr-Igor-Kononenko/dp/1434998983?fbclid=IwAR3egbxzBs7IjkVu8XXJVIGoTZIAQaJ_rpUUYrb8nAlY2nRfyXSD_05qCKI

The Four Entrustment: the quintessence of the Kadampa's heart .
Entrust the innermost of the mind with Dharma;
Entrust the innermost of Dharma with destitution;
Entrust the innermost of destitution with death;
Entrust the innermost of death with the dry ravines.

May the precious masters grant their blessings,
So that with joyful self-assurance and freedom of mind,
I may bring all adverse circumstances onto the path,
And everything may become a remedy to ego-clingin.

Homage to the unsurpassed savior, the Lord of Oddiyana.

Now that you've found this precious human life with freedom and richness,

Take care not to squander it unconsciously.

Push yourself to uncover the meaning of this life.

Your mind is the source of everything.

It is skilled in deception and manipulation, and beguiling when unexamined.

Once you look into it, it is without basis or root.

It comes from nowhere, stays nowhere and goes nowhere.

Everything, including samsara and nirvana,

Is but a reflection of pure and impure mind;
唯淨、垢心之投映;

In reality, neither samsara nor nirvana exist.

The source of compassionate awareness.

Is primordially empty. Though free from characteristics,

It is not just a barren nothingness.

But is luminous and naturally present.

Pristine awareness is not captured by names and labels.

The endless unfolding of samsara and nirvana pours forth as its radiance.

At the same time, there is no rift between the place from where all these come and that which is coming;

Remain in that nondual place.

Unborn dharmakaya Rigpa.

Arises naturally without cause or condition.

Alert, fresh and naked,

It is uncolored by dualistic mind,

And unpolluted by intellectual ideas.

Stay in that spontaneously arisen meditation.

Even the words "to meditate" are but words;

In reality, there is no meditator and nothing to meditate on.

Without distraction, always maintain empty awareness,The true face of dharmakaya.

The deluded karma of samsara will never run out.

The more you work to solve your problems, the greater they become.

Belief in enemies and friends grows and grows,

And the causes for incarnating in lower realms pile up.

Direct yourself toward the dharma,

And if you can bring dharma to every action, word and thought,

You will uncover the great awakening, the path to liberation.

When death falls upon you, you will regret nothing.

During this life and in those to come,

You will walk the path of ever-growing happiness.

Atop your head and in your heart,

Imagine as a single being Your most kind guru and the great Lord of Oddiyana.

Feel an upwelling of unbearable longing and devotion.

Whatever joy or sorrow befalls you, whatever favor or misfortune,

Pray forever to the lord Guru.

Let your minds flow together, yours at one with his.

As death draws near, let go of all attachment and hatred.

Picture Guru Padmasambhava above your head;
善觀蓮師於頂上;

Imagine your consciousness as an orb of light, marked with the syllable Hri;
觀己心識如光球─種子字「啥」(Hri)標其上;

Dissolve that into the heart of the guru.

If you practice regularly now,

And recite "The Aspiration to Be Born in the Copper-Colored Mountain,"

At death, a clear visualization will be easy.

To put it briefly, the essence of dharma.

Is to cut through clinging to samsara,

To cultivate love and compassion toward those in the six realms.

And to completely tame one's mind.

Without distraction, please always practice thus.

Even though I am immune to dharma, have no experience of meditation,
and just use up the donations, I, Chokyi Lodro, wrote this according to what the past masters have taught,
to fulfill the request of the yogini Pad Lu.

I prostrate at the feet of the noble guru!
Child, you who are a suitable vessel and the Three Supreme Ones as refuge, listen!
Your faith and intelligence are supremely stable,
You have renunciation, and are disillusioned and compassionate.
For the likes of you, the qualities of the path.
Will go on increasing like the waxing moon,
While I am busy royally devouring offerings,
And blessings and compassion only diminish.
Still, it is certain that the reflection of blessings.
Will appear in the clear, mirror-like surface
Of the minds of fortunate disciples.
The mind is primordially pure, an empty expanse,Complete with a spontaneously present, radiant clarity.
Looking into the very face of your own awareness,You will be freed from the sullying defects of duality.
Meditate by settling naturally in unaltered experience.
And in spontaneous action be without hope and fear.
Whatever appears or arises will be naturally liberated, there and then.
These are instructions for the Great Perfection.
With these words, I, the one called Chökyi Lodrö,
Wrote whatever came spontaneously to mind.
I pray that this is no different from meeting me in person!

A Shift in Attention ~ Kalu Rinpoche
Regardless of the emotion being experienced — be it desire, anger, pride, jealousy, envy, greed,
or whatever — what is really going on is a shift in attention.
The mind is expressing itself in a different way.
Nothing implicitly requires one to presume that this emotion has any reality in and of itself…
It is just that the mind is expressing itself in a different way than it was a moment ago.

TARTHANG TULKU RINPOCHE

Some might say that looking inside of ourselves for spiritual truths is egocentric and selfish,
and that egolessness and selflessness lie in working for others in the world.
But until we find our inner truth, our work in the world will always revolve around our ‘selves’.
As long as we think about the world in terms of ‘self’ and ‘others’,
our actions will be selfish. Our ‘self’ follows us wherever we go, so positive results will be limited.

https://www.facebook.com/226315370736444/videos/1550953878272580/

我們大家的一個共同問題,在於自己的心和情緒老是惹麻煩、出狀況,但令人難過的是,我們完全不想談這件事;

Of course these days world right now is really into competition, people are losing their culture,
they are trying to achieve something but at the same time they are even getting into a lot of trouble,
a lot of difficulty.
One thing i can see these days people are really losing their trust to each other,
their basic human sense the trust, and even the inner goodness,
the inner peace of human being, even that we are losing it too.

When we study Buddhism it will hit our own anger, jealousy, hatred, that inner enemy.
All the Buddhadharma, the teachings, is all about helping you,
is only about helping you, how to understand yourself, how to clarify your mistakes,
how to be a better person, and how to go through the difficulties in your life.
What you really do, you keep it in your heart, and through your heart, one day you will speak it out.
And that is the real way, that is what I really call appreciation, that's what I really call love.

Sentient beings are limitless.
Therefore if we cultivate bodhicitta by relying on the understanding that there are limitless sentient beings,
our cultivation of bodhicitta becomes limitless too.
The authentic cultivation of limitless bodhicitta is accomplished that way.

Then if our cultivation of bodhicitta is limitless,
it goes without saying that the benefits would be limitless too.
But the problem is that we do not fully understand that sentient beings really are limitless.

We may talk about "all old-mother-like sentient beings who are equal to space",
but nobody seems to fully understand just how vast the universe actually is.
And no one seems to know that it is pervaded by sentient beings.
Some scientists even say that there are no inhabited worlds except planet earth.
But such a perspective is too narrow! It is like only seeing the eye of a needle!

Generally speaking, we regard discomfort in any form as bad news.
But for practitioners or spiritual warriors
– people who have a certain hunger to know what is true
– feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy,
and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we’re holding back.
They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we’d rather collapse and back away.
They’re like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we’re stuck.
This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it’s with us wherever we are.

So the whole Buddhist path on one level can be a way of understanding
how to loosen and eventually drop our desperate grasping at this sense of me.
Right there at the center of the universe and definitely the big spider in the middle of the web
that we are all weaving.
Which we imagine if we can only keep satisfied, if we can only please,
if we can only keep feeling that it’s worthwhile, we will be happy.
And not recognizing that that is the cause of all our suffering.

以及這麼做又會如何把我們束縛在相當狹隘的世間觀之中。這是個機會,可看見你正執持自身對實相的解讀;

Seeing when you justify yourself and when you blame others is not a reason to criticize yourself,
but actually an opportunity to recognize what all people do
and how it imprisons us in a very limited perspective of this world.
It’s a chance to see that you’re holding on to your interpretation of reality;
it allows you to reflect that that’s all it is—nothing more,nothing less;
just your interpretation of reality.

Nyingma Masters

People tend to plan their dharma practice, and especially like to dream of making a long retreat.
We plan how the retreat hut should look, its shape and where it should be positioned;
we plan the time to start our retreat, maybe one, two or three years from now.
It is very easy to make such plans, but it is more difficult for these plans to become reality.
Therefore it is more realistic to engage in Dharma practice today, right this moment,
not tomorrow or next year. Practice now in whatever situation is at hand.
Otherwise, your life can easily run out while planning to practice later. Do not make long-term plans.

KHANDRO RINPOCHE

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TRAINED MIND AND AN UNTRAINED MIND

The difference between a trained mind and an untrained mind lies in the ability of pausing,
looking at that, and sensing whether it is necessary or not.

◆If your intention is not clear, if you aren’t really weary of samsara,
then going on retreat is just another game.
Even if you stayed for your whole life, you would just be wasting time and you would not learn anything.
Many animals spend their lives in caves or in the ground like groundhogs,
just eating and shitting without practicing Dharma.
The Buddha said that people who go on retreat without first understanding real Dharma have
the solitude of a demon’s hook.

The same is true for those who understand Dharma but have no intention of benefiting sentient beings,
just wanting to go from samsara’s suffering to samsara’s vacation.
When people who have spent time in solitude without understanding come out of retreat,
only hair, beards, and fingernails are longer; otherwise, everything is the same.
When they come out, they have more ego than before and they boast about their accomplishments
with saintly pride or siddha arrogance.

“When we talk about our past, we can imagine that we are talking about someone that we knew a long time ago,
but have not kept in touch with lately.
We know that when we are born, we are perfectly innocent and free from all flaws.
This spiritual birth can only occur through the death of the old self.
That’s why there is a saying in the Zen tradition: “One must die some day on the meditation cushion.”

49. Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche 1985

Q: Why is this pointing-out instruction considered so important?
Tulku Urgyen : That is self-evident.
Isn’t naked knowing the actual path for attaining enlightenment?
There is nothing more important than recognizing it and become a buddha.
If you put all the riches in the world on one side and the pointing out of naked knowing on the other,
this knowing is more valuable for enlightenment.

It is said that Avalokiteshvara was once asked by a disciple,
“What practice is the most essential to accomplish buddhahood?”
Avalokiteshvara answered that the most important thing,
the most essential thing to do to attain buddhahood, is to practice compassion.
This is because when you practice compassion, all other qualities,
such as loving kindness and the enlightenment mind, are naturally accomplished and naturally gather.

The doctrine of zeroness, asserting the lack of self-identity
and the lack of absolute separation in all things,
became the central teaching of Mahayana Buddhism.
In zeroness, all things are connected; nothing is absolute; nothing is separate; nobody is alone.
Even Buddhist doctrines are seen as zeroness, not containing absolute fixed truths.
Experience of this teaching is seen as awakening, as freedom,
no other than prajna paramita [perfection of wisdom].

Appreciating Everything Around You ~ Gyalwang Drukpa

Appreciate and rejoice, without any expectation.
It doesn’t matter if people are unkind to you, it doesn’t matter if people betray you,
it doesn’t matter if people don’t even say ‘thank you’ to you; by appreciating everything around you,

The Heart of Unconditional Love: A Powerful New Approach to Loving-Kindness Meditation

LOVING-KINDNESS THAT IS FREE FROM CONCEPTS

According to Buddhism, all existents abide in loving-kindness free from concepts in their absolute nature.
But the understanding and realization of that true nature have been covered over by the webs of our own mental,
emotional, and intellectual obscurations.

Now, in order to uncover the true nature and its qualities, we must dispel the cover—our unhealthy concepts,
emotions, and actions. Through the power of devotion and contemplation,
we must uncover and see the true innate enlightened qualities—loving-kindness
that is free from concepts—shining forever.

“Milarepa has taught that, in actuality, mindful awareness and mental afflictions
--one's own awareness and mental afflictions
--are not separate, because mental afflictions and concepts are in the nature of emptiness.
If one realizes this through meditation, then one realizes
that actually wisdom and mental afflictions are non-distinct.

We talk about the five types of primordial awareness,
such as the individually discriminating awareness and so forth,
but they all have one essential meaning, which is mindful awareness. This mindful awareness is similar to fire,
and the five mental afflictions are like fuel for the fire, the wood. When wood is burned up by the fire,
then the wood itself becomes fire, and the fire gets ever stronger.
Therefore the mental afflictions are not separate from one's primordial awareness.
They ARE primordial awareness; this is the view of Mahamudra.
The phurba, the wisdom awareness phurba, explains the view of Mahamudra,
and it the principal of the four phurbas when it comes to meditation practice.”

Matthieu Ricard: The Search for Happiness

The search for happiness is not about looking at life through rose-colored glasses
or blinding oneself to the pain and imperfections of the world.
Nor is happiness a state of exultation to be perpetuated at all costs;
it is the purging of mental toxins, such as hatred and obsession,
that literally poison the mind.
It is also about learning how to put things in perspective and reduce the gap between appearances and reality.
To that end we must acquire a better knowledge of how the mind works
and a more accurate insight into the nature of things, for in its deepest sense,
suffering is intimately linked to a misapprehension of the nature of reality.

"Both virtuous and nonvirtuous actions are formed in the mind.
Actions—though more apparent – are secondary to our motivation.
Even an apparently virtuous action is of little benefit if the root of our motivation is selfishness.

Completely free from judging yourself,
Watch your physical, mental, and emotional behavior.
What are your weaknesses?
Watch how easily you are irritated.
Watch how easily your mind judges other people.
Watch what you say and think when your mood is off.
Completely free from judgement,
Transform your weaknesses into gentle reminders to let go and recheck your motivation.
Practicing this will greatly benefit yourself and others.

SACREDNESS IN ART
A good work of art always reflects a notion of sacredness within it....
A work of art is created because there is basic sacredness,
independent of the artist's particular religious faith or trust.
That sacredness is the aspect of heaven, which creates an umbrella, so to speak,
that becomes very powerful and very real.
At that point, human dignity is more important than the particular religion or discipline a person came from.
That sounds great, don't you think?
Sacredness from that point of view is the discovery of goodness,
which is independent of personal, social, or physical restrictions.

INQUISITIVENESS
The notion of looking at things as they are is a very important concept.
Look! Why do we look at all? Or we could say, Listen! Why do we listen at all?
Why do we feel at all? Why do we taste?
The one and only answer is that there is such a thing as inquisitiveness in our makeup.
Inquisitiveness is the seed syllable of the artist. The artist is interested in sight, sound, feelings,
and touchable objects.
We are interested and we are inquisitive, very inquisitive,
and we are willing to explore in any way we can.
Such tremendous inquisitiveness is the key point in the way we look at things,
because with inquisitiveness we have a connection.

Dr. Barry Kerzin’s Essay on Twitter Dated 2017.11.02.

So much of our mental pain and anguish stems from our almost obsessive clinging to the person we think we are.
This leads to so much disappointment, disillusionment,
and worse. When was the last time you took a critical look into the question,
“on a deeper more fundamental level who really am I?”
This goes beyond mere intellectual curiosity.
Sometimes just sit quietly examining this question.
See what surfaces, if anything. Learn to become AWARE through this quiet inner process.
Just be aware and rest in this awareness. Try it, you may like it.
