The Word of the Buddha
Profound and peaceful, free from complexity, uncompounded luminosity—
I have found a nectar-like Dharma.
Yet if I were to teach it, no-one would understand,
So I shall remain silent here in the forest.
(Lalitavistara Sūtra, XXV, 1)
I have discovered a nectar-like truth,
Deep, calm and simple, lucidly awake and unformed.
To whomever I explain, no one will understand;
So I will remain silent in the jungle.
(trans. Eric Pema Kunzang)
Deep and peaceful, thought-free, luminous, unmade:
The nectar-truth, this now I have discovered.
Were I to teach it, none would understand;
And so I will remain, not speaking, in the forest.
(trans. Padmakara Translation Group, from "The Nectar of Manjushri's Speech: A Detailed Commentary on Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva")
