His father was Pema Wangchen or Gyurme Kunga Tendzin, and his mother was Chimé Deden Drolma, the daughter of the eighth throneholder, [[Gyurme Yishyin Wangyal]]. He therefore shared the same father as the tenth throneholder, [[Gyurme Döndrup Wangyal]], Penam Rinpoche, and Khenchen Ngawang Khyentse Norbu. He had the same mother as Penam Rinpoche, [http://www.mindrolling.org/history/femaleMasters/jtl.cfm Jetsün Tsewang Lhamo] (d. 1995) and Mayum Dechen Wangmo.<br /> <br /> He studied from a young age with many different teachers from [[Kham]] and Central Tibet. At the age of 21, he received full ordination from [[Khenchen Ngawang Norbu]]. He became the regent during the minority of [[Minling Trichen Rinpoche]].
